Improving mental health is more complicated than 'defunding' the police

Dr. Hatcher wrote an opinion piece for the Ottawa Citizen about how to train police officers to best respond to mental health related calls.

Improving outcomes for the mentally ill in crisis will require systematic change, including joint working between police and mental health workers, educational approaches such as Project ECHO and a properly funded mental health system that is effective and accessible. Preventing tragedies when the police encounter the mentally ill is not as simple as just ‘defunding the police’.
